What is PARED?
PARED aims to serve as an approachable structure to inspire inquisitive creators to both collect and organize oral histories in this distinctive format. Each issue provides pointed glimpses into a topic through five diverse, pared-down first-person interviews, a removable poster as a keepsake, and one longer form interview, article, or Q&A that provides a deeper read.
PARED is a community driven pamphlet that is printed, never “posted”. Born to travel, PARED was designed by hand and meant to be shared by hand in the old-fashioned way — snail mail. We want PARED to move through space and time, fostering connections through its very physicality. Each version is printed in an edition of 500 with the run being split 50/50 between Risolana and the contributor. PARED is a project based in collaboration.
Curiosity-Driven Exploration:
Contributors explore topics that pique their curiosity, no matter how niche or unusual. We encourage contributors to find creative and engaging entry points into these topics to draw out unique first person stories. Risolana will support contributors with a processes to help transcribe & organize interview materials.
Authentic Storytelling through Interviews
Interviews are at the core of PARED’s format for sharing stories around topics. The goal is to capture the essence of these stories in a way that fosters a deeper understanding of how subjects are embodied in lived experiences. Pared wants to engage diverse voices that are activated by the curiosity of each contributor.
Constraint Based Format:
The format for PARED consists of a trifold mailer that has strict design constraints and word counts to help contributors narrow down the essence of their project. Each issue, a guest designer will explore these constraints. Pared also has a signature removable fold out poster that is part of every publication.
